From Fear to Faith: My Unexpected Journey to Motherhood
Introduction
Motherhood is never a straight path. Sometimes, it’s filled with unexpected turns that test every ounce of strength you have. This is my story, a journey from fear to faith, and the miracle that changed my life forever.
The Day Everything Changed
December 8th, 2021 started like any other day. I walked into my appointment expecting reassurance, but instead, I was told my son had Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR), also called Fetal Growth Restriction. His placenta wasn’t functioning properly, and his umbilical cord wasn’t giving him the nutrients he needed. No explanation just “it happens.”
In a matter of hours, I went from low-risk to high-risk. Weekly scans, NSTs, and an induction scheduled for the 29th became my new reality. I left that appointment terrified, clinging to hope.
When Plans Fell Apart
December 13th, 2021 felt routine, until it wasn’t. During my scan, they discovered his condition had worsened. The doctor told me my placenta issues had gotten worse, and the blood flow through the umbilical cord kept pausing and starting again instead of staying steady, and the risk of stillbirth was high. Within an hour, I was admitted.
I had no hospital bag, no clothes—nothing. I thought I had two more weeks. But life had other plans.
The Scariest Hours of My Life
Labor started slowly. Then they broke my water, and everything spiraled. His heart rate and mine crashed. Suddenly, eight or more people were in my room, flipping me side to side, calling a code white.
I was rushed to the Operating Room. My OB leaned in and said, “You will be okay. When you wake up, you’ll have a baby.” That was the last thing I heard before the mask went on.
Meeting My Miracle
At 2:12 AM on December 14th, 2021 Travis Wynn was born—tiny but mighty, weighing in at 3 lbs 5 oz and 16.5 inches long. I woke up hours later, sore, confused, and without my baby in my arms.
He was in the NICU, fighting. Despite my own healing, I stayed with him for hours before going back to my hospital room. When it came to being discharged, leaving him there broke me. Ten days of visits, monitors, wires, and prayers. Ten days of watching him prove everyone wrong!
Home for Christmas
On Christmas Eve, we got the call that our miracle could come home. Just in time to meet Santa! Just in time to remind me what strength looks like. This journey wasn’t what I planned but somehow it gave me the greatest gift: a fighter who taught me resilience, faith, and unconditional love. He is the reason I am here today, speaking up and advocating for those who are often overlooked and misunderstood. His journey taught me that every voice deserves a chance to thrive. Travis didn’t just change my world—he gave me a purpose.
A Message to Other Moms
To every mom who is expecting, facing a high-risk pregnancy or NICU stay:
You are stronger than you know. The fear, the uncertainty, the heartbreak—it can be overwhelming, but you are not alone. Every ounce of love you pour into your baby matters. Every tear, every prayer, every sleepless night is building a story of courage. Hold on to hope, even when it feels impossible. Miracles happen every single day—and yours is worth every fight. 💛
